Intensive English Institute: Illinois Scholars at Risk have the opportunity to take courses at the University of Illinois Intensive English Institute (IEI). Since its establishment in 1967, IEI has helped thousands of international students and professionals improve their English language proficiency for academic, professional, and everyday use. IEI is accredited by the Commission on English Language Program Accreditation (CEA). IEI’s highly qualified faculty are committed to supporting students and scholars with their language learning goals. Illinois Scholars at Risk who choose to study English at IEI will take an English Placement Test prior to starting coursework, to determine their proficiency level. Then they will receive further guidance about what courses may be available for them to take at their level. Courses are offered in the spring, summer, and fall terms. Specific course availability may vary by term. Examples of courses Illinois Scholars at Risk have taken include Reading and Writing, Listening and Speaking, and Grammar. Another highlight for Illinois Scholars at Risk who study at IEI is the opportunity to participate in IEI’s many extra-curricular and cultural activities, as part of a diverse learning community with other IEI students from around the world.
